Air conditioners are essential for keeping our homes cool and comfortable during hot Utah summers, but have you ever wondered how they work? At Ogden HVAC, we specialize in maintaining, repairing, and installing air conditioning systems, and we’re here to explain the process in simple terms.

The Basics of Air Conditioning
An air conditioner doesn’t create cold air—it removes heat from your home and releases it outside. This process is made possible by a system of components working together to transfer heat, regulate airflow, and maintain a consistent indoor temperature.

Key Components of an Air Conditioner
  1. Compressor
    • Located in the outdoor unit, the compressor is the heart of the air conditioner. It compresses refrigerant gas, increasing its pressure and temperature.
  2. Condenser Coil
    • The condenser coil, also in the outdoor unit, releases the heat absorbed from inside your home. The refrigerant cools down and turns back into a liquid as it passes through the condenser.
  3. Evaporator Coil
    • Found in the indoor unit, the evaporator coil absorbs heat from the air inside your home. The refrigerant evaporates into a gas as it absorbs heat, cooling the surrounding air.
  4. Refrigerant
    • This chemical substance circulates between the indoor and outdoor units, transferring heat from your home to the outside.
  5. Fan and Blower
    • The fan in the outdoor unit helps expel heat, while the blower in the indoor unit circulates cool air throughout your home.
  6. Thermostat
    • Your thermostat controls the system, ensuring it maintains the desired temperature by cycling the air conditioner on and off as needed.

How the Cooling Process Works
  1. Heat Absorption
    • Warm air from your home is pulled into the air conditioner and passes over the evaporator coil.
    • The refrigerant absorbs the heat, cooling the air.
  2. Heat Transfer
    • The refrigerant, now a warm gas, flows to the compressor in the outdoor unit.
    • The compressor increases the pressure and temperature of the refrigerant.
  3. Heat Release
    • The hot refrigerant gas moves through the condenser coil, where the heat is released to the outside air.
    • As the refrigerant cools, it returns to a liquid state.
  4. Air Circulation
    • The blower sends the cooled air back into your home through ducts and vents.
    • The cycle repeats until your home reaches the desired temperature.

Why Regular Maintenance is ImportantYour air conditioner works hard to keep your home cool, and regular maintenance is crucial to keep it running efficiently. Here’s why:
  • Improves Efficiency: Clean coils and filters allow the system to cool more effectively.
  • Extends Lifespan: Preventive maintenance reduces wear and tear, helping your system last longer.
  • Lowers Energy Bills: An efficient system uses less energy, saving you money.
  • Prevents Breakdowns: Routine checks catch small issues before they become major problems.
