During Utah’s hot summer months, your air conditioner works hard to keep your home comfortable. But is it working efficiently? At Ogden HVAC, we often hear from homeowners who are frustrated with high energy bills, uneven cooling, or systems that seem to be running non-stop.
Good news: a few smart habits and simple tweaks can go a long way in making your AC perform better and last longer. Below are some of our top AC tips and tricks—straight from the pros.
1. Change Your Filter Regularly
This is the easiest (and most ignored) maintenance step. A dirty air filter restricts airflow, making your AC work harder than necessary. This can lead to higher energy bills and even damage the system.
Tip: Change your filter every 1–3 months depending on usage, pets, and allergies.

2. Keep Vents Open and Unblocked
Closing vents in unused rooms won’t save money—it actually creates pressure imbalance and can damage your ductwork. Always keep vents open and make sure furniture or rugs aren’t blocking return air grilles.

3. Use a Programmable or Smart Thermostat
Set your thermostat to adjust automatically when you're away or asleep. A smart thermostat can learn your schedule and reduce cooling costs without sacrificing comfort.

4. Don’t Set the Thermostat Too Low
Setting your thermostat to 65°F won’t cool your home faster. In fact, it forces the system to run longer, which wastes energy and increases wear.
Recommended setting: 72–76°F during summer, depending on your comfort level.

5. Schedule Preventative Maintenance
An annual AC tune-up helps spot small issues before they turn into big repairs. At Ogden HVAC, we check refrigerant levels, clean coils, inspect components, and test overall performance.

6. Keep the Outdoor Unit Clean
Leaves, grass, and debris around your condenser unit can block airflow and reduce efficiency. Gently hose off dirt and keep plants trimmed back at least 2 feet.

7. Use Ceiling Fans
Fans don’t lower air temperature, but they improve air circulation, which can make your space feel cooler. Set ceiling fans to spin counterclockwise during summer.

8. Don’t Ignore Strange Noises or Odors
If your AC is making unusual sounds or smells musty, it's a sign that something’s wrong. Call a licensed technician before it leads to a breakdown—especially in peak season.

9. Upgrade an Old Thermostat
Old manual thermostats are less accurate and less efficient. A digital or Wi-Fi thermostat gives you better control and better performance, especially in extreme weather.

10. Consider a Zoning System
If your home has hot spots or uneven cooling, a zoned HVAC system can regulate temperatures room by room. This is especially helpful for two-story homes or additions.

Bonus Tip: Don’t Skip the Warranty
Keep a record of service dates and proof of maintenance. Many manufacturer warranties require regular maintenance to stay valid.
